Wegmans and the Food Bank of the Southern Tier have launched the 32nd annual Check Out Hunger campaign, running now through November 29 at Wegmans stores in Corning, Elmira, Hornell, Ithaca, and Johnson City.
The effort supports families facing food insecurity throughout the region. Since its start in 1993, Check Out Hunger has raised more than $2 million — helping the Food Bank provide millions of meals through its programs and partner pantries.
“With the cost of living rising, more families are turning to food pantries for help,” said Food Bank President and CEO Mark Bordeau. “Every dollar truly makes a difference.”
Shoppers can donate $2, $3, or $5 at checkout. Thanks to the Food Bank’s buying power, each dollar donated helps provide three meals to local households in need.
Wegmans Community Relations Manager Linda Lovejoy said the campaign is crucial heading into the holidays and beyond.
“This campaign not only provides our local food bank partners with funding as we head into the busy holiday season, but it also supports their programs throughout the year,” Lovejoy said.
Hunger has been rising across the Southern Tier, with 1 in 7 people — including 1 in 5 children — now at risk of going hungry, the highest level in more than a decade.
