10th Anniversary of the Penn Yan Floods

May 13 and 14, 2014, that’s when up to six inches of rain fell within a relatively short period of time.

Penn Yan Mayor Leigh MacKerchar  a lifelong village resident said he remembers all of the devastation from the 1972 flooding, (from Hurricane Agnes) but he says this storm was worse.

MacKerchar told WXXI in Rochester, “We’ve got some culverts and we had a building that’s collapsed and foundations eroded away, major erosions under some of our parking areas and our roads; some of our streets have been washed away, at this point, we’re just assessing where we need to start.”

From the Finger Lakes Times: Several lines of storms swept through the region last night, causing water- and power-related problems throughout the four-county area. No one was hit worst than Penn Yan, where an estimated five inches of rain fell.

“[Yates County Highway Superintendent] Dave Hartman told me it’s one of the worst floods he’s ever seen,” Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike said this morning. “Pretty much anywhere you have gullies or streams that go under roads, there are problems.”
