State Troopers with Troop E held their annual Memorial Day Ceremony Thursday.
Joined by local law enforcement agencies, friends, and family, the event paid tribute to those troopers from Troop E who lost their lives in service to New York State.
Troop E Commander, Major Miklos S. Szoczei II “Today, we remember the men from Troop E who served with unwavering dedication and commitment to the safety of the citizens of New York State. Each performed duties without hesitation or reservation for the good of their communities and the betterment of society. We will continue to remember and honor their sacrifice.”
Six men from Troop E, which covers Cayuga, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates Counties, were honored at the event.
- On June 30, 1974, Trooper Raymond Dodge was shot while investigating a dispute between neighbors on Seneca Lake near Dresden. He succumbed to his injuries two days later.
- Trooper Robert Gaylo lost his life on May 13, 1980, during an automobile accident while on patrol in Owasco.
- Investigator Robert VanHall was shot to death on December 5, 1980, while in the process of arresting two brothers for drug trafficking in Corning.
- On March 1, 2006, Trooper Andrew Sperr was shot to death by bank robbers in Big Flats.
- Trooper Burroughs passed away on May 25, 2016, from an illness stemming from his work at the World Trade Center site following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
- Trooper Nicholas Clark died on July 2, 2018, when he was shot after responding to the report of a suicidal man in Erwin.
