A 13-year-old boy who was critically injured in a shooting in Syracuse last week is not expected to survive, according to city police.
Syracuse Police said the shooting happened around 9:13 p.m. on June 24 at 198 Lincoln Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the 13-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound and a 16-year-old who had also been shot. The older teen was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Monday, police identified the deceased 16-year-old as Damarion Jones.
According to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, the investigation indicates the 16-year-old accidentally shot the 13-year-old before fatally shooting himself. Fitzpatrick previously told WSYR-TV in Syracuse the teen “apparently felt so guilt-ridden he shot himself.”
Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin said the two teenagers were friends.
Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene but have not confirmed whether it was the weapon used in the shooting.
Following the incident, Rusin also said the department is aware of 27 illegal firearms, referred to as “community guns,” circulating on Syracuse streets and urged the public to help police locate them.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
