The Town of Williamson is again asking residents and businesses to voluntarily conserve water as water levels in the town remain critically low. Officials say the issue is due to freezing conditions affecting the town’s water intake pipe in Lake Ontario. A similar request was made two weeks ago.
Prolonged cold weather has caused accumulations of frazil ice at the intake, limiting the volume of water the town can draw to meet daily needs. While the intake is not fully blocked, the reduced flow has prompted the town to request community cooperation to ensure an adequate water supply.
To supplement the town’s supply, water is currently being drawn from other utilities with preexisting infrastructure connections. Officials say if voluntary conservation is insufficient, mandatory restrictions may be implemented.
Residents can help by:
- Avoiding vehicle washes
- Fixing leaks in faucets, toilets, and pipes
- Taking shorter showers
- Not letting tap water run unnecessarily during hand-washing or dishwashing
- Running dishwashers and washing machines only when full
- Contacting the water department to shut off service to vacant properties
Town water crews are working around the clock, and major water users have already been contacted to reduce consumption. Due to unpredictable weather, it is unclear how long these conditions will last. The public will be notified when normal water usage can resume.
