Waterloo’s Suffredini Named 2024 Welles Recipient

The Waterloo Library & Historical Society has announced the 2024 Henry C. Welles Awardee is Gina Suffredini. The annual event will serve to kick off the Celebrate Commemorate weekend starting at 6:00 p.m. on May 24th in the Library and Historical Society’s newly renovated Fatzinger Hall.

Suffredini, a 1976 graduate of Waterloo attended Herkimer County Community College then SUNY Geneseo where she graduated with a BS in Speech and Hearing and continued her education at Nazareth University receiving her Master’s degree in Education. She continued her passion for teaching in Waterloo for 30 years as a Speech and Language Therapist having a positive impact on students of all abilities earning her Waterloo Education Association Teacher of the Year. While working within the Waterloo Education Association Suffredini was the building representative, Secretary of the Teacher’s Union, served on the contract negotiations team, and even chief negotiator.

Suffredini is extremely active within her community serving 3 terms as an elected Village Trustee where she has been the First Woman Deputy Mayor, and served on numerous village committees including Public Safety, Personnel, Community Service, Department of Public Works, Water, and Sewer. She also has been involved in the revitalization efforts in downtown, village codes, the assessment team, and the the Village Police Department negotiations team. Suffredini also served as a liaison between the Waterloo School District and the Village of Waterloo.

She is a member of numerous community organizations, serving on executive committees, and has been awarded honors within many of them. Some of these committees are the Celebrate Commemorate Committee, Waterloo Rotary, Catholic Charities, Phi Beta Psi Sorority, Seneca County Retired Teachers Association, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life team, Catholic Daughters of the America’s, St. Frances-St. Clare’s Festival Committee, Trevor’s Gift Backpack Program, Rotary Camp Onseyawa Fundraising Committee, and more.

It is no surprise that someone as involved with so many aspects of the community would be chosen to receive the Henry C. Welles Award. When asked of her reaction to this honor Suffredini stated, “I am proud and honored to be among the list of so many past recipients. Promoting and sharing our historic community and rich history with current residents as well as future generations is important to me. I hope that the time and effort volunteering over the years has inspired others to become involved in community events and organizations so that we continue to preserve what is uniquely ours here in Waterloo.”
