SHARE NOW

The Victor teen accused of driving his car through a stop sign at a Wayne County intersection before crashing into another car, killing a retired Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy has entered a not guilty plea to the charges he faces.

State Police say on January 2nd, 18-year-old Evan Haggett, was driving north on Canandaigua Road when his Ford Focus struck a Hyundai Sonata that was westbound on State Route 441. The driver of the Sonata, 62-year-old Tommy Doherty, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 56-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Sonota, and two girls ages 17 and 15 who were passengers in Haggett’s car were all taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Haggett entered not guilty pleas to charges of driving without a license, improper restraint of someone between the ages of 7-to-15, and two counts of failure to yield.  He is not facing criminal charges due to insufficient evidence to prove impairment or distracted driving, according to the District Attorney’s Office, which told WROC-TV that the charges against him are limited to traffic violations.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
