Varacalli Day Award Recipient Honored

SHARE NOW

Each year, the Town of Seneca Falls honors the legacy of Antonio Varacalli, an Italian immigrant whose courageous act on April 12, 1917, continues to inspire the community. Witnessing a woman in distress along the Cayuga and Seneca Barge Canal, Antonio selflessly jumped into the water to save her—ultimately giving up his own life in the process. His heroism was later recognized with a posthumous bronze Carnegie Hero Fund Medal.

On Saturday, the community gathered on the Bridge Street Bridge to remember Antonio and celebrate local individuals who embody his spirit of compassion and courage.

This year, the Antonio Varacalli Day Award for Good Citizenship and Heroism – selected from nominations submitted by the Seneca Falls community – was presented to Sarah Smolinski. Nominated by Paula Coffey, Sarah was recognized for exceptional commitment to the community. She is the founder of Ashia’s Closet, an initiative that supports Safe Harbors and domestic violence awareness, and she plays a key role on the United Way team while actively contributing to numerous community efforts.

In addition, several “Community Angels Awards” were presented to individuals chosen by their respective organizations for their outstanding service and dedication. The “Community Angels” this year was the Seneca Falls Library nomination – Robert F. Kernan, Seneca Falls / Waterloo Kiwanis nomination – Marty Toombs and Seneca Falls It’s A Wonderful Life Museum nomination – Deb Barbieri.

Antonio Varacalli Day is organized by the It’s A Wonderful Life Festival Committee.
