UPDATE: Seneca Falls Shooting Victim Identified; Suspect Charged

12:30 P.M. UPDATE:

The Seneca Falls Police Department has identified the shooting victim. 47-year-old Antonio Caban Ortiz, of Geneva, is listed in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

11:30 A.M. UPDATE:

The Town of Seneca Falls Police Department reports that the investigation remains active. The victim is still hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

10:30 p.m. UPDATE: 

Seneca Falls Police have identified the suspect in Sunday’s shooting in the parking lot of Tops.

35-year-old Jose Garcia-Vellen, of Waterloo, has been charged with assault as a violent felony. He was being held at the Seneca County Correctional Facility awaiting arraignment.

The investigation remains active.

The Town of Seneca Police Department was assisted on Sunday by Waterloo Village Police, Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Mercy Flight, North Seneca Ambulance, the Seneca Falls Fire Department, and the Seneca County District Attorney’s Office.

More information will be made available at a later time.

6 p.m. UPDATE: Police say the victim was shot in the face.  One person was arrested and three others were taken for questioning.

Kathy Sautter, Director of Corporate Communications & Public Relations for Tops released the following statement regarding the shooting:

“Earlier today an incident involving an individual with a firearm took place outside the Tops located in Waterloo, NY.  One individual was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.  The suspect is in custody.  

We are working collaboratively with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation.  The store has reopened after being temporarily closed.

One person was shot Sunday afternoon in the Tops Friendly Supermarket Parking Lot in Seneca Falls.

Seneca County Sheriff’s Deputies, New York State Police along with Seneca Falls and Waterloo Police responded to the scene.

Shoppers coming out of the store say they heard a gun shot, others were told by employees to remain inside the store.

One victim was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital by Mercy Flight.

Three people were reportedly taken into custody.

North Seneca Ambulance and the Seneca Falls Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

No other details have been released.  Police are still investigating.
