The Geneva YMCA is ringing in the New Year with exciting updates on its “Building What Matters” Capital Improvement Project (CIP), despite cold weather and ongoing construction challenges. Project Chairman Charlie Evangelista said while some construction projects are temporarily on hold, the Y’s ambitious expansion and renovation plans are moving forward, and significant progress is being made on its new 11,000-square-foot addition on Norwood Avenue.
“Drive by the Y, and you’ll see the steel framework of the new addition taking shape,” said Evangelista. “Soon, the structure will be enclosed with walls and large glass windows, generously donated by Guardian Glass Industries. The new space will serve as a dedicated area for strength and fitness training, along with rooms for youth activities, senior gatherings, and educational classes—meeting the growing demand for community space.”
This expansion is the first phase of a multi-phase renovation project. The overall project is expected to take about a year to complete, with the new addition being the key first step.
In addition to phase one, the Y is also beginning work on phase four, which includes essential roof replacement and updates to the HVAC system. As part of this process, the adult locker rooms will be renovated sooner than planned, originally scheduled for later in the year. While construction impacts access to locker rooms and showers, the youth locker rooms are temporarily being made available for adult use. The Y appreciates members’ understanding and patience during this time of transition.
“The Geneva YMCA has served our community for nearly fifty years, and this long-awaited renovation is essential to meeting the growing needs of our members and providing an even better space for kids, families, and seniors,” said Evangelista. “We are excited that 2025 will be the year this extreme makeover becomes a reality.”
The YMCA remains open and committed to serving the community during construction.
Evangelista said, “Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Y has the financial resources to continue with these important upgrades, but additional donations are always welcomed to help make the project the best it can be.”
