SHARE NOW

5:40p Update: The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Newark Police Department are continuing their investigation into the suspected drowning that occurred Monday night in the Erie Canal in the Village of Newark.

Witnesses reported seeing the teen enter the water from atop a guardrail on the North Main St bridge just after 8:00p.

A passerby attempted to locate the teen but was unsuccessful.

First responders arrived on scene and the boy was found roughly one hour in the water, deceased. The individual was identified at the scene by next of kin.

While the investigation is ongoing, foul play is not suspected at this time.

A 17-year-old drowned in the Erie Canal Monday night.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports a 911 call was received at about 8 o’clock regarding a person who jumped into the canal near Main and Van Buren streets in Newark and had not resurfaced. Attempts by a passerby to rescue the teenage boy were unsuccessful.

Firefighters later recovered the teen’s body from the water and he was pronounced dead at the scene.  The victim was reportedly a student at Newark High School.

Although police found nothing suspicious at this time, this is considered an open investigation and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office will continue to follow available leads.
