Two Canandaigua cemeteries will, for the second year, be official sites for this weekend’s 2024 National Wreaths Across America Day.
The ceremonies at Hunn Cemetery and Academy Cemetery on Saturday at 12 Noon will occur simultaneously in conjunction with Arlington National Cemetery and other participating locations across all 50 US states, Puerto Rico, and on foreign soil.
After the ceremony, guests present may take part by placing a wreath on a veteran’s grave, saying their name aloud, and thanking them for their service. Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and Civil War re-enactors, as well as guest speakers, will salute those who simply did their duty when called upon.
Hunn Cemetery, located at 5821 CR 32, contains the graves of 14 Revolutionary War veterans and 1 veteran from the War of 1812. Academy Cemetery, located at 5200-5298 Old West Lake Road, is the resting place of 48 veterans and honors 7 Civil War veterans on a monument that was dedicated on October 8, 1923.
Wreaths Across America (WAA) started as a simple gesture of thanks that has grown into a national, year-long movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service but to teach the next generation about the value of freedom. This year, there will be more than three million volunteers coming together at more than 4,500 participating locations, to place more than three million handmade wreaths on veterans’ graves. These wreaths are delivered through the generosity of hundreds of volunteer truck drivers and their companies.
The mission of Wreaths Across America is to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.
All National Wreaths Across America Day events are non-political, non-religious events, and open to everyone.
