Two major housing projects in Newark are progressing steadily, according to Mayor Jonathan Taylor. As part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, Taylor said the projects will help address a growing need for housing not only in the village, but across the region.
The Coventry Commons redevelopment, which is transforming the former Sarah Coventry/Harrison Street building into 101 apartments, is moving quickly. The third-floor renovation is complete, and the building’s new oversized windows are now visible to passersby.
The long-vacant St. Elizabeth Hospital is also preparing for a new life. The building, unused since 1998, now has full permitting in place and is expected to begin construction soon. Plans call for eight to nine market-rate apartments, expanding housing availability in downtown Newark.
Taylor emphasized that these projects are part of a coordinated regional approach to development.
With both projects advancing, 2026 is expected to bring significant construction activity across the village. Taylor said the community will look “definitely different” by 2027 as redevelopment efforts take shape.
