Two Canandaigua residents have been arrested following a long-term investigation into animal neglect and child endangerment at a Purdy Road residence.
Ruth Barnhart, 40, and Brian Ogdenski, 27, are accused of maintaining unsanitary conditions and failing to provide medical care for animals at their home. The investigation, which began in February 2025, resulted in the seizure of five dogs, including hound and Cane Corso mixes. Authorities report one dog was found roaming free while others were confined to metal cages; all were found to be underweight, with two dogs severely emaciated and one suffering from bed sores.
In addition to the animal welfare concerns, officials discovered a 12-year-old boy living at the residence, prompting an investigation by Child Protective Services. The Town of Canandaigua Code Enforcement office subsequently deemed the home uninhabitable.
Barnhart and Ogdenski have both been charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty, a felony, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Both individuals were issued appearance tickets for Canandaigua Town Court at a later date.
The Ontario County Humane Society was assisted in the investigation and rescue by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, the Ontario County Probation Office, and the Town of Canandaigua Code Enforcement.
