The Town of Williamson is asking residents and businesses to conserve water as the community faces critically low water levels caused by freezing conditions at the town’s Lake Ontario intake.
Prolonged cold weather has led to “frazil ice” accumulating in the intake pipe, reducing the volume of water the town can draw. While the intake is not completely blocked, officials say the reduced flow is affecting the town’s ability to meet normal demand.
To help maintain a reliable water supply for essential needs, Williamson is asking all users to voluntarily reduce water usage. If conservation efforts fall short, mandatory restrictions may be implemented.
Ways residents can conserve water include:
- Avoid washing vehicles
- Fix leaks in faucets, toilets, and pipes
- Take shorter showers
- Do not let taps run unnecessarily
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full
- Contact the water department to shut off water to vacant properties
The town has begun drawing water from connected utilities and has reached out to major users to reduce consumption. Water crews are working around the clock to address the issue.
Officials warn that, given the current weather forecast, the situation may last a week or longer. Residents will be notified when normal water operations resume.
