The Town of Canandaigua has been officially certified as a Pro-Housing Community by New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), affirming the Town’s commitment to responsible growth and housing policies that address regional and state needs. The designation also makes Canandaigua eligible for up to $750 million in discretionary state funding opportunities.
To earn the certification, the Town submitted five years of data on zoning, planning, and building permits, demonstrating a growth rate of more than 5% over the past three years—surpassing the State’s minimum threshold. HCR praised Canandaigua’s leadership, noting that housing progress across New York relies on municipalities that help families access safe, affordable, and equitable housing.
Town Manager John Falbo credited the Town’s Development Office staff for their dedication in compiling five years’ worth of data in just one month—a process that can take other municipalities up to a year. “Our team’s efficiency and hard work made this achievement possible,” he said.
Town Supervisor Jared Simpson called the certification “a major accomplishment” and said it strengthens the Town’s ability to leverage state resources for residents. He acknowledged challenges, including unexpected utility infrastructure costs that threaten more than 1,000 urgently needed housing units, such as the Uptown Landing project, but emphasized the Town remains committed to working with partners to keep housing projects moving forward.
The Pro-Housing Community designation reinforces Canandaigua’s long-term vision for balanced, sustainable growth that benefits residents, businesses, and future generations.
