Nearly $200,000 in grants will support tourism infrastructure, visitor amenities, and events along New York’s canals.

The NYS Canal Corporation and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor have announced that 43 nonprofits and municipalities have been awarded funding to support eight infrastructure and amenity improvements along with 36 events along the waterways and Canalway Trail.

Three projects in the Finger Lakes were awarded grants.

$9,979 will go to the Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry’s Seneca Falls Boater Amenities Improvement Project. The funding will repair floors, improve restrooms, paint walls, and install free public wifi.

The Town of Lyons will use $12,245 to replace aging wooden benches with weather-resistant equipment throughout the town’s canal parks.

The Village of Clyde has received $8,000 to add benches and picnic tables along the Empire State Trail near the village.

New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “As we prepare for this year’s navigation season on New York’s canals and the Erie Canal’s Bicentennial in 2025, I am pleased we are able to support so many events and new infrastructure projects along the canal corridor through this program. New York’s canalside communities will use these capital improvements and activities to enhance visitor experiences while simultaneously bolstering their local economies.”

“It’s our privilege to support this incredible group of community partners who are dedicated to improving the NYS Canal System for visitors and locals alike. Tourism infrastructure, amenities, and events contribute to a more vibrant Canalway Corridor and maximize the economic impact of this world-class waterway.” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
