21 New York counties have been downgraded from Drought Warning to Drought Watch, citing several weeks of consistent rainfall and improving streamflow and groundwater levels. Among those are Steuben and Wayne, which now join the rest in the lower-alert category.
The New York State DEC reports in total, 56 counties are now listed under the drought watch designation across New York State.
While this shift reflects improving conditions, the DEC emphasized that observed precipitation across the state remains below normal — generally two to seven inches under average for the past 90 days — meaning voluntary water conservation is still recommended.
Residents in Steuben, Wayne, and the other affected counties are encouraged to monitor local water use, fix leaks, limit outdoor watering, and follow other water-saving practices.
