Snow geese found dead in Seneca County earlier this month have tested positive for Bird Flu. The DEC was alerted on January 10 about a high number of dead geese near Lakeshore Landing, with Cornell University confirming Avian Influenza.
Additional reports of dead geese have come from Cottonwood Cove and Kashong Point, where 50 to 60 birds were found. So far, only snow geese are affected, but other species could be at risk.
Seneca Lake Pure Waters is working with town officials and the DEC to coordinate bird removal efforts. The CDC and other public health officials say there is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission, and the risk to the general public is low.
What to Do If You Find Dead Snow Geese
Since Avian Flu spreads through mucus and feces, it’s crucial to avoid contact with birds’ eyes, mouth, or droppings.
- Limit contact with dead wildlife unless absolutely necessary.
- Keep pets and children away from deceased birds.
- If you must handle a carcass, wear disposable gloves and eye protection (sunglasses are fine). Wash reusable gloves immediately after use.
- Double-bag carcasses and dispose of them in your regular trash.
- Wash any clothing or surfaces that come into contact with dead wildlife immediately.
