Seneca Meadows Submits Revised Environmental Statement

SHARE NOW

Seneca Meadows Inc. has submitted a second revision of its draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) to the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as part of its application to expand its landfill. The Finger Lakes Times reports the revised document, filed May 28, is under review to determine if it is complete and ready for public comment and a potential hearing.

The DEIS process began in July 2024, but the DEC requested additional information and issued about 250 questions. After a second draft in January, more concerns were raised, prompting the latest revision.

SMI is seeking approval to expand the landfill upward by 47 feet in the Tantalo infill area, which would allow operations to continue until 2040. The landfill is currently expected to reach capacity when its permit expires on Dec. 31.  Seneca Meadows is the largest landfill in New York.

A 2016 local law requiring the landfill to close by that date was challenged by SMI but ultimately upheld by New York’s highest court.
