Last month, the Right to Run held its annual 5K race in Downtown Seneca Falls, where over 300 registrants participated between in-person and virtual race options. The Right to Run raised a total of $18,452 which included this year’s proceeds, and donation proceeds from 2023. These funds will go on to help support initiatives for women in the Finger Lakes Region including Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes, CAP Women’s Transitional Home, 1st Amendment – 1st Vote, United Way Women’s Leadership Council, and the Athena A.C.E. Award.
This year’s run was a tribute to Menzo Case, who was the founder and President of the Right to Run. A special bell ornament and custom shirt were given to all the runners as a keepsake. The Right to Run was created to celebrate Seneca Falls as the Birthplace of Women’s Rights, as the course is aligned to pass historical houses and landmarks.
“The support we received from our runners and sponsors this year was tremendous, and we just hope to continue to grow every year to be able to give back to our community and continue to raise funds for local organizations” states Derek Dyson, President of the Right to Run. “We are also incredibly grateful for our first responders, volunteers, and others who helped make sure our runners were safe and that the event ran smoothly.”
The overall male winner and overall winner of the race was Desmond Hill from Stanley, who clocked a time of 18:07. The top female winner, who also finished fourth overall in the full field, was Donna Langerfield of Port Byron, who finished with a time of 19:41.
The main sponsors of the race helped support a large portion of the race’s proceeds—Generations Bank, ITT Goulds Pumps, Bonafiglia Family Foundation, Waterloo Container, Northeast College of Health Sciences, MIX 98.5, and It’s a Wonderful Run 5K.
Next year’s race date is still yet to be determined. Thank you to all who made this event a huge success!
