Senator Pam Helming has been honored by the Marcus Whitman Central School District with its “Paying Attention to the Whole Student” (PAWS) Award, recognizing her advocacy and commitment to supporting students both inside and outside the classroom.

The award was presented during the district’s opening-day program, where Helming had earlier presented a proclamation recognizing the work of Marcus Whitman Special Olympics leaders, organizers, and volunteers.

“Our district is blessed to have Senator Helming taking such an active role in our students’ experiences,” said Sheila Brown, president of the Marcus Whitman School Board. “We are proud of our PAWS program, and we know that the senator supports all of our families by always making each student a priority.”

Superintendent Brown announced the creation of the annual PAWS recognition during his opening remarks. Helming was then called forward and surprised with the inaugural 2025 PAWS Award in front of the Board of Education, district administrators, teachers, and staff.

Helming said receiving the award was especially meaningful given the number of school districts she represents across the Finger Lakes.

“Representing more than 30 school districts, I see every day how critical it is to invest in our students, teachers, and families,” Helming said. “Our schools and our children are at the heart of our communities, and I am proud of the work being done at Marcus Whitman and grateful for the opportunity to support their mission.”

She added that students in rural communities and smaller school districts deserve equal access to resources and opportunities and pledged to continue advocating for their success.
