A retired 40-year veteran of the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the Border City Fire Department.

John Morabito is accused of stealing $16,000 in donations, rental hall payments and income received by the fire department while he served as its chief from 2015 through 2021. The Finger Lakes Times reports Morabito also allegedly used the fire department’s home improvement store credit card to make $2,200 in unauthorized purchases for construction supplies, tools, bathroom light fixtures, and a table saw for use at his residence.

A year ago, Morabito announced he was running for sheriff but dropped out of the race in February because of what he said were”circumstances beyond my control.”

Along with the sheriff’s department, Morabito spent time with the Park Police, and the Waterloo and Interlaken Police Departments. He was an aircraft specialist at the former Seneca Army Depot.

The Times reports Morabito’s case will be handled in Seneca County Court.
