Local environmental advocates remain upset that Greenidge Generation is still operating its crypto-mining facility in Yates County despite the state DEC denying its air permit renewal application almost one year ago. At a rally at the Geneva Welcome Center Wednesday morning to mark the anniversary of the permit denial, Yvonne Taylor with Seneca Lake Guardian claimed they stand for everything that she said Greenidge is not.
“We stand for clean air, healthy lakes, and a liveable climate,” Taylor told the crowd. “That’s why tourists come back to the Finger Lakes year after year. And that’s why we need to get Greenidge to read the writing on the wall. It’s time to get Greenidge out.”
Greenidge is currently appealing the DEC’s ruling and maintains it has and is continuing to operate well within New York’s environmental guidelines. The company adds its Yates County tax contributions have been critical in allowing the county to reduce the local property tax rate without any reductions in services, which include public safety, roads and infrastructure, education, and more.
