On Saturday, at 12:08 p.m. an annular (partial) solar eclipse will be visible in the region. Looking at an eclipse with the naked eye or regular sunglasses can cause permanent eye damage. Be sure to wear specialized glasses to view this natural phenomenon.
Kate Ott, Director of Ontario County Public Health states, “Eclipses are interesting and provide a great opportunity for kids to learn about the natural world. Looking directly at the sun, however, can damage your eyes. Wear protective glasses made specifically for eclipse viewing when you check out the sun on Saturday.
Ontario County Public Health says to hang on to those glasses as you will need them again soon. On April 8th, 2024, the Finger Lakes will be a prime viewing location for a total solar eclipse. They suggest it’s not too early to start planning for this rare occurrence.
