Protests Planned For Landfill Meeting

SHARE NOW

The Seneca Meadows Landfill in Seneca Falls is holding a public meeting tomorrow to update Seneca County residents on plans to expand the landfill.

Details on “The Valley Infill Plan” will be discussed including the aspects of the operation, future plans, and benefits to the community.  The public meeting is Wednesday from 11am to 1pm at the Seneca Falls Community Center.

Seneca Meadows has operated in Seneca Falls for 40 years, the Valley Infill Plan would allow the landfill to operate for another 15 years.

Seneca Meadows provides hundreds of local jobs, $4-million dollars in tax revenue for Seneca Falls and Waterloo, and over $70-million dollars in the local economic impact each year.

If you plan on attending the public meeting tomorrow be prepared to be greeted by protesters.  The environmental group-Seneca Lake Guardian-will hold a demonstration outside the Seneca Falls Community Center.  The group’s co-founder Joseph Campbell says they will educate the public on negative environmental impacts of the landfill and call for the landfill to be closed by 2025.

Seneca Meadows is asking the state Department of Environmental Conservation to approve its proposal to expand upward by 70 feet, allowing the landfill to add 47 million cubic yards of deposit space and to remain open at current deposit rates until 2040.
