State Begins Firing Striking Corrections Officers

SHARE NOW

Terminations have begun for New York State corrections officers who remain on strike.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision posted a message on social media, and sent termination letters to those still on the picket lines, as well as a warning issued Sunday about the potential loss of health care benefits. DOCCS announced last night that the department has started terminating officers who have missed more than 11 consecutive shifts due to striking.

Many of the striking correction officers have indicated they won’t be returning to work. They don’t believe the agreement goes far enough in addressing their concerns. It’s unknown how many officers received the termination notices.

According to DOCCS, about 90% of the state’s 13,500 correction officers and sergeants are participating in the strike.
