Prescribed Burns Planned in Finger Lakes National Forest

SHARE NOW

Officials with the Finger Lakes National Forest are preparing to carry out a series of prescribed fire operations beginning this month and continuing through April, with additional burns possible later in the spring depending on weather conditions.

The controlled burns are part of ongoing efforts to reduce overgrown vegetation and lower the risk of wildfires, helping to protect nearby communities, infrastructure, and natural resources.

According to forest officials, about 1,100 acres within the Hector Ranger District in Seneca and Schuyler counties are included in the plan.

Some areas may be temporarily closed to the public for several days during burn operations to ensure safety. Visitors are urged to watch for posted warning signs along roadways near active burn areas.

Residents in surrounding communities may notice smoke during the operations. Officials recommend checking air quality conditions online and using caution when driving in smoky conditions, including slowing down and using headlights.

Each prescribed burn will depend on favorable weather conditions, which will be evaluated shortly before ignition. If conditions are not suitable, scheduled burns may be postponed or canceled.
