A Waterloo man is dead after police say he was involved in a fight with a home owner in Wayne County during an apparent home invasion Sunday night.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports Jeffrey Smith was armed with a metal pipe when he attempted to gain entry into a home on West Genesee Street in Clyde at 11 o’clock. Smith is accused of assaulting the 67-year-old homeowner with a blunt instrument before the two men got into a fight.

Smith was taken to Newark Wayne Hospital and died from his injuries. Police did not disclose what caused Smith’s fatal injuries. The unidentified homeowner suffered head injuries and was treated at the same hospital before being release.
