A Rochester man has been arrested in connection with the theft of more than $50,000 worth of iPhones from a store in Macedon, following a two-year investigation.
Police say 32-year-old Anthony Capers was taken into custody during a traffic stop by the Elmira Police Department. Authorities say Capers was wanted on a Superior Court warrant tied to a Wayne County Grand Jury indictment.
The charges stem from an incident on February 2, 2023, at the Walmart in Macedon. Investigators allege Capers posed as an employee of an outsourced sales company to gain access to the store’s master keys. Surveillance video reportedly shows him using the keys to open a locked storage container and remove more than 60 iPhones, valued at nearly $52,000.
Police say Capers then left the store without paying. After a lengthy investigation and evidence processing, a grand jury returned an indictment on April 2, 2025.
Capers was turned over to the Macedon Police Department and charged with second-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree conspiracy, and second-degree criminal impersonation. He was arraigned in Wayne County Court and later released.
The Macedon Police Department was assisted by the New York State Police and the Elmira Police Department.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
