An apparent murder-suicide in Ontario County has claimed the lives of an elderly Canandaigua couple.

Police were called to a residence on Wyffels Road last Thursday by a delivery driver after noticing packages delivered the week before remained outside.  After forcing their way through a locked door, deputies located 82-year-old Priscilla Herbik and 81-year-old Christian Herbik on a floor inside of the home, victims of gunshot wounds. A shotgun was found near the body of Mr. Herbik. Investigators say there was no sign of a struggle in the residence.

The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Mrs. Herbik’s death as a homicide due to a gunshot wound to her upper body, while Mr. Herbik’s death was ruled a suicide due to the gunshot wound to his upper body.

Police say the investigation is ongoing but it is believed to be an isolated incident within the residence.  There is also no indication that this incident ever posed a threat to the community.

“The thoughts of our members remain with the family as they navigate this tragic incident and devastating loss,” said Sheriff David Cirencione.
