SHARE NOW

A Palmyra man is facing serious charges after allegedly attacking and stabbing a man on a walking trail in Monroe County

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies say the incident happened at the Indian Hill Park Trailhead on Pittsford Palmyra Road in Perinton. According to investigators, the victim was walking along the trail when 30-year-old Derrick Van Epps approached from behind and, without warning, knocked him to the ground and stabbed him multiple times with a hunting knife.

The victim was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies say Van Epps was spotted shortly after the attack by Perinton Park Security, who saw him driving away and turning into Egypt Park. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Van Epps has been charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Assault in the Second Degree. He was arraigned in CAP Court and is being held in the Monroe County Jail on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says Van Epps acted alone and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
