The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of Bruce “BJ” Moore, a dedicated 911 dispatcher and firefighter who spent more than 25 years serving the community. Moore, 47, of Geneva, passed away unexpectedly on December 18 at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Born on April 30, 1978, in Geneva to Bruce A. and Grace (McLaughlin) Moore, Sr., Moore graduated from Geneva High School in 1997 and attended Finger Lakes Community College. Following in his father’s footsteps, he devoted much of his adult life to firefighting before making a career as a 911 dispatcher with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office for nearly 20 years.

An avid outdoorsman, Moore enjoyed hunting trips to Wyoming and Colorado with his father, fishing on the Finger Lakes, and camping in the Adirondacks. He also cherished time with his family, teaching his son Collin to operate tractors, drive four-wheelers, and shoot rifles, and enjoying quiet moments with his pets, Wesson, Tasha, and Benny.
Moore is remembered not only for his dedication to public service but also for his love and devotion to his family. He shared 20 years of marriage with his wife, Amanda, and was a devoted father to Collin. Friends recall his adventurous spirit, from trekking across Icelandic glaciers to playful antics closer to home.
The Sheriff’s Office says Moore’s passing has left a lasting impact on the community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
