With summer officially here, Ontario County Public Health is offering tips to beat the heat.
The health department is offering the following tips to stay cool and safe when temperatures rise:
Stay Cool and Hydrated
Hot, humid weather can lead to life-threatening heat-related illnesses. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day (usually 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and opt for early morning or evening hours instead. Stay hydrated—drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. Electrolyte drinks
are helpful for extended, high-intensity activities but should not replace water.
Most Vulnerable Groups
• Children overheat quickly and may not recognize symptoms.
• Older adults may have trouble regulating body temperature.
• Pregnant people and those with chronic conditions like heart disease or asthma are at
increased risk.
Signs of Heat-Related Illness
• Heavy sweating
• Muscle cramps
• Rapid heartbeat or breathing rate
• Dizziness or headache
• Nausea or vomiting
Call 911
As body temperature increases, skin may become hot, red or dry and individuals may be lethargic, confused, have seizures or lose consciousness. Call 911 immediately if you suspect a heat emergency. While waiting for help:
• Move the person to a cooler place (AC or fans).
• Offer cool drinks, if alert.
• Remove excess clothing.
• Apply wet towels to exposed skin, particularly the neck, underarms, and groin.
• In a beach or pool setting, if it can be done safely, immersion in shallow water may help.
Tips to Prevent Heat-related Illness
• Check the forecast daily.
• Carry water and drink before you feel thirsty.
• Monitor urine color—light yellow indicates good hydration.
• Rest in the shade or air conditioning.
• Reschedule yard work or workouts to cooler times.
• Watch for symptoms in family, coworkers, and teammates.
• Teach kids to recognize early signs like headache or muscle cramps.
• Check on elderly neighbors and relatives.
