Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County is promoting venison donation this hunting season.
Speaking on FLX Morning with Ted Baker, Mo Tidball with CCE said the Venison Donation Coalition pays processors to process meat into one-pound frozen packages. The nonprofit then contacts local food pantries to pick up the meat to be distributed to those in need.
“If someone’s out there and they get an extra deer and they’ve got plenty [of meat] in their freezer, they can donate it.”
Last year, CCE worked to bring the program to Seneca County by partnering with Finger Lakes Meat Processing. This year, Tidball said Serendipity Acres Farms Meat Market in Ontario County would process meat for donation.
Tidball added that, if you hit a deer with your car, that meat can be donated as well.
