Two corrections officers were injured late last month at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus.
According to NYSCOPBA, the incident happened on August 22 when an officer heard banging and yelling from one of the hospital cells in the facility infirmary. When he went to investigate, he observed an inmate standing on a hospital bed, ripping out electrical wires from the bed and destroying the fire alarm on the ceiling.
After the individual ignored several orders to stop from the officer, he called for more officers and staff.
When the door was opened and an officer entered the cell, the inmate jumped off the bed and struck the officer in the face with a padlock he had in his hand.
A second officer then entered and the two placed the inmate in a body hold and forced him to the ground. The inmate remained combative on the ground and refused to drop the padlock. Using force, the officers were eventually able to make him drop the handcuff. He was then placed into handcuffs and brought to his feet.
After an evaluation, the inmate was declared suicidal and placed on watch in a cell.
The inmate is currently serving 1-4 years after being convicted in Oneida County in 2024 for Attempting to Make Suicidal Threats.
The first officer suffers pain and swelling to his face, a laceration to his ear, and elbow and wrist pain. The second officer suffered an elbow injury while subduing the inmate. Both officers were treated by medical staff at the facility and remained on duty.
“With four months left in the calendar year, the assaults keep coming at a record pace. Currently, we are on pace to exceed 2000 assaults on staff, the first time we ever have exceeded that number. The reality is, the assaults will continue and they are a direct result of the disastrous criminal justice policies the State Legislature has passed over the last several years, including the HALT Act. None of that will change until they realize that our members are overworked, understaffed and are daily targets of inmate violence with a watered down disciplinary systems,” stated Kenny Gold, NYSCOPBA Western Region Vice President.
