Three officers were injured earlier this month at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus.
According to NYSCOPBA, the union representing corrections officers, the incident happened on September 13 when an incarcerated individual refused to exit his cell to be escorted to the infirmary. The three officers entered the cell and placed him into a body hold before forcing him into a corner.
The inmate then kicked one officer several times in the groin, upper leg, and knee, and a second in the hand as he attempted to break free. The third officer injured his elbow as the three forced the inmate to the floor and applied leg restraints.
Once he became compliant, the individual was taken to the infirmary for evaluation.
All three officers were treated by medical staff at the facility.
The 23-year-old is currently serving a two to six-year sentence for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. He was originally arrested for the armed robbery of a convenience store in Broome County in 2018.
He was scheduled to be released on October 5.
“It is incomprehensible that an inmate with a little more than a week on his prison sentence would attack staff and jeopardize his impending freedom, one would think, but not in NYS! The inmate even made threats to the officers that when he was released from prison he would be waiting for them in the parking lot. This is the type of violent inmate our members have to face every day inside of jails across the state. If this inmate is willing to attack and injure staff, including a female officer with little more than a week to his release, there is no way he should be walking free and be a threat to the public,” said NYSCOPBA Wester Region Vice President Kenny Gold.
Earlier this month nine staff members were injured at Auburn Correctional Facility.
