After years of leading the Newark Police Department through a period of major transition, Police Chief Rich Martin is retiring from his role with the Village of Newark.

Village officials say Martin provided steady leadership during a time that included the retirement of several veteran officers while also focusing on recruiting and training a new generation of police officers to keep the department strong and community-focused.

Local leaders are thanking Martin for his service and impact on the community.

“Chief Richard Martin has been a dedicated leader and partner in serving the Newark community. I’m grateful for his support and collaboration on issues important to our shared constituents. His service has made our community stronger, and I wish him the very best in retirement,” said Senator Pam Helming.

Assemblyman Brian Manktelow also praised Martin’s service.

“Police Chief Rich Martin has done an incredible job serving the Village of Newark, and our community as a whole. To serve and protect the people of your community in the capacity that Rich has is a great honor, and I cannot extend enough gratitude to him for everything he has done. We will truly miss him, and I hope he enjoys his retirement to the fullest.”

Newark Mayor Jonathan Taylor expressed similar appreciation.

“We wish Rich the very best in his retirement,” stated Mayor Jonathan Taylor. “We are grateful for his dedicated service to the Newark Police Department and the Village has been fortunate to have him on our team.”

Police Commissioner Stu Blodgett also reflected on Martin’s tenure.

“While I am sad to see him leave, Rich Martin has earned this retirement. He has done a tremendous job here as Chief of the Newark Police Department and has left us in great shape going forward. I wish him only the best in this next phase of his life.”

Village officials say Martin’s leadership helped guide the department through significant changes while maintaining a strong commitment to serving the Newark community.
