The Newark Police Department says a man wanted for child sex crimes has been taken into custody after being tracked down in Florida and returned to Wayne County.
Daniel Shaffer was arrested following a years-long investigation that began in 2021 with a report to Child Protective Services. Investigators say Shaffer was physically abusive to both an adult and a child victim, and engaged in sexual conduct with the child, who was under the age of 13, for several years.
Police said Shaffer could not be located during the initial investigation, and it was later discovered he had moved to Florida. A Wayne County Grand Jury indicted him, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Earlier this year, Sgt./Investigator Nick Dapolito of the Newark Police Department worked with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to track Shaffer down. He was ultimately located and arrested by Gainesville Police in Florida on unrelated charges.
Shaffer was later flown back to New York by the task force and turned over to Newark Police. He was processed and taken to the Wayne County Jail, where he awaits arraignment in Superior Court.
He faces the following charges:
- Sexual Conduct Against a Child less than 13 years old – 1 count
- Criminal Sex Act, 1st degree, victim under 13 years old – 1 count
- Rape, 1st degree – 4 counts
- Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child – 4 counts
- Incest, 1st degree – 4 counts
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
