The Village of Newark is recognizing longtime Code Enforcement Officer Roger VanDeMortel for his 20 years of service as he enters retirement.
Village officials say VanDeMortel brought decades of experience from his work with New York State to his role in Newark, where his knowledge and professionalism made a lasting impact on the community.
Colleagues describe him as someone with a strong sense of humor and a talent for storytelling, as well as a natural ability to connect with both coworkers and residents during his daily duties.
Mayor Jonathan Taylor praised VanDeMortel’s dedication, calling him a “devoted and conscientious employee” and noting the village was fortunate to have him. He added that the community wishes him well in retirement.
Fellow Code Enforcement Officer Joe Vanni also highlighted VanDeMortel’s contributions, saying he was instrumental in helping him adjust when he first joined the department.
“To his community and his coworkers, Roger was reliable, trustworthy, and hardworking,” Vanni said. “It will be hard to fill the shoes he left behind.”
