New StoryWalk Opens in Ontario County Thanks to Eagle Scout Project

Families in Shortsville now have a new way to enjoy reading outdoors, thanks to a project led by local Eagle Scout James Stratton of Troop 39.

The Red Jacket Community Library announced the installation of a new StoryWalk® in Budd Park, an interactive literacy trail that combines reading, movement, and time in nature. Pages from a children’s picture book are displayed in weather-resistant stands along the park’s sidewalk, beginning near the playground. Families can read together as they walk from page to page.

Stratton developed and completed the project as part of his Eagle Scout service project, the highest achievement in Scouting. He designed and built the display stands, organized installation with help from fellow scouts, family, and volunteers, and partnered with the Village of Shortsville to secure park space.

“I wanted to do something that families could enjoy together and that would benefit the whole community,” Stratton said. “The StoryWalk® brings people outside to read, move, and spend time together, which is exactly what I hoped for.”

Library Director Jordan Schneider called the project a perfect fit for the library’s mission. “It gives families a chance to discover stories together while enjoying the beauty of Budd Park,” she said.

The StoryWalk® will be updated seasonally with new children’s books to encourage families to return throughout the year.

The concept was originally created in Montpelier, Vermont, and has since spread to libraries and parks across the country as a unique way to blend literacy and the outdoors.

The Budd Park StoryWalk® is open daily during daylight hours.
