The last few days of hot temperatures and very light winds have provided favorable conditions for cyanobacteria to proliferate and accumulate along the Canandaigua Lake shoreline. The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association reports the extent of the blooms may go along many properties. Most of the blooms have been reported along the east side of the lake, but reports from the west side surfaced on Wednesday afternoon.
The Association says both volunteers and watershed staff have been out reporting the extent of the conditions and several samples have been collected, which will be sent for analysis at the Finger Lakes Institute in Geneva. Based on previous year’s results that blooms have the potential to produce high toxins, they are encouraging residents and visitors, along with their pets, to exercise caution and avoid areas that have green discolored water, surface streaking, a pea-soup like appearance, or scums.
