The National Women’s Hall of Fame has received a $500,000 grant from the Historic Preservation Fund, as administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, for the continued rehabilitation of the historic Seneca Knitting Mill located in Seneca Falls.
Hall of Fame Board President Kilbourne stated, “We are honored that the National Women’s Hall of Fame is set to receive this grant, helping us to create a first-class site for visitors from around the world to learn about the significant contributions of American women to our nation’s great history. It is especially significant that our new home resides in the birthplace of the American Women’s Rights Movement.”
In 2019, the NWHF was able to move to the 1st floor of the newly restored and rehabilitated 4-story limestone building, welcoming visitors to newly installed exhibits and programming. Planning and fund-raising never stopped. With assistance from private donors and New York State Capital granting agencies, work began again in 2021 to design and construct full accessibility to all four floors with a new code-compliant stairwell, restoration of the historic circular stairwell, initial 2nd-floor buildout, and the addition of a glass-enclosed bridge link to the new elevator addition – all completed by the end of 2023.
With work still to be done, this new grant will enable the Hall to continue its rehabilitation efforts including second-floor exhibit lighting, expansion and improvements to HVAC and electrical systems, plus the planned implementation of new office and program spaces.
