Alejandro Caraballo and Graham Wakley are preparing to head off to the Regional Spelling Bee, scheduled for 10 am Saturday at the Palmyra-Macedon Performing Arts Center.
Last month, Caraballo defended his Midlakes Spelling Bee championship for his fourth consecutive win, taking home the top prize after a 20-round, two-hour battle. Wakely took second place in the event and will participate in the Regional Bee as well. Emerson Kuhn, with third, qualified as an alternate.
This is Caraballo’s final year of eligibility. It is also the 100th anniversary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The Midlakes Spelling Bee featured 34 students in grades 3-8 on the Midlakes High School Auditorium stage. Contested annually at Midlakes, the event helps strengthen student’s knowledge of the English language while working on their listening and speaking skills and other techniques to correctly spell more difficult words throughout the competition.
The Midlakes Spelling Bee is a part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and is sponsored by Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES. Winners from the Regional Bee will move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, competing for the Scripps Cup, scheduled for May 27-29 in National Harbor, MD outside Washington, DC.
