Memorial Walk in Ovid to Push for New DNA Testing in O’Connell Case

SHARE NOW

Friends, family, and community members will gather in Ovid on Thursday to remember Kristin O’Connell and renew calls for justice in her decades-old murder case.

The memorial walk begins at 6:15 p.m. on West Seneca Street and will end at the rural intersection where O’Connell’s body was discovered 40 years ago. The evening will include a poem she wrote to her grandmother, a prayer for her family, and a public push for further DNA testing in the case.

Organizers are asking participants to bring candles for the walk, which will also be streamed live for those unable to attend in person.

O’Connell, a 20-year-old college student from Minnesota, was killed after leaving a party in Ovid on Aug. 15, 1985. Her body was found the next day in a nearby cornfield.  She was naked, stabbed in the chest, and her throat was slashed.

Police have chased over 2,000 leads in the case but have never made an arrest.
