An independent mediator has been brought in to help quickly and fairly resolve the ongoing strike at nearly 30 New York prisons, including Five Points, Cayuga, and Auburn.
Scheinman Arbitration and Mediation Services, based in Port Washington, initially planned a three-day mediation starting Tuesday to address key issues behind the strike. However, at the request of the Correction Officers’ Union, mediation will now begin on Monday.
“At the initial meeting today, February 21, 2025, NYSCOPBA pressed for formal mediation to start more quickly. Based upon NYSCOPBA’s arguments, I suggested it was a good idea to begin earlier and the Commissioner of DOCCS; his Chief of Staff, and the Director of OER, readily agreed. Therefore, the formal mediation will begin Monday, February 24, 2025.” – stated Martin F. Scheinman Esq.
Correction officers walked off the job this week, citing unsafe working conditions as their main concern.
