Lyons Central School District officials are condemning a racist remark directed at a student-athlete following Saturday’s boys’ basketball game.
District leaders said they became aware of the incident after the game, when a racist comment was made toward one of their students. The district did not disclose the specific language used or identify who made the remark.

In a written statement, Superintendent Matthew Barr said no student should ever be subjected to language or behavior that threatens their dignity or safety, calling the incident “painful and unacceptable.”
Barr also praised York Central School District and its superintendent for their response, saying they acted quickly and made clear the behavior does not reflect their school community.
The statement also thanked Lyons’ coaches, students, and community members for how they handled the situation. Barr said they responded with composure and chose to represent the district with integrity and respect under difficult circumstances.
He said that response reflects the values the district works to instill and a culture focused on doing the right thing.
