88 Volunteer fire departments across the Empire State are receiving $25 million to improve their facilities and response capabilities.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the funding comes from the state’s Volunteer Fire Infrastructure and Response Equipment Grant program.
“Volunteer firefighters exemplify the best of public servants, and an investment in them is an investment in the safety of the communities they serve. These grants will give volunteer firefighters the resources they need to continue protecting New Yorkers; support befitting of their professionalism and the invaluable weight of their efforts.”
The money can be used for the construction of new or renovation of existing fire stations, classrooms, meeting spaces, and training centers. Funding can also be used to install exhaust and decontamination systems and purchasing equipment.
Locally, the Middlesex Fire District and Sodus Point Volunteer Fire Department have received $287,226 and $161,020 respectively for equipment purchases. Locke Hose Co. No. 1 ($190,000), the Village of Montour Falls ($628,795), New Hope Fire Department ($1 million), Penn Yan Fire Department ($850,000), and Yates County ($839,340) have all received funding for facilities work.
