Kitchen Fire Displaces Geneva Family; No Injuries Reported

SHARE NOW

The City of Geneva Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire at 35 Dixon Avenue on Sunday night. Dispatchers initially received a report of a stove fire, but as crews were en route, the caller reported that the entire kitchen had become engulfed.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and launched an aggressive interior attack, containing the flames to the kitchen area. Officials say working smoke detectors alerted one adult and five children on the second floor, allowing everyone to evacuate safely before crews arrived. No injuries were reported.

The kitchen sustained major fire damage, while the rest of the home suffered moderate smoke and water damage. Investigators determined the cause to be unattended cooking.

Geneva firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Geneva Police Department, White Springs Fire Department, West Lake Road Fire Department, Ontario County 911, the county’s Emergency Management Office, NYSEG, and the Geneva Housing Authority. The American Red Cross was also notified to assist the family.

The department is reminding residents to stay in the kitchen while cooking and to ensure smoke detectors are installed and functioning on every level of the home.
