Invalid Votes Spark Hope for Re-Vote on Seneca Meadows Landfill

SHARE NOW

After Tuesday night’s votes by the Seneca Falls Town Board to approve a new host community agreement and local operating permit for the Seneca Meadows Landfill were deemed invalid because the votes were conducted without a motion, or second being made by board members, opponents of the landfill are hoping the town board will change their minds on how they voted. The resolutions will be placed on a future agenda for a re-vote.

Yvonne Taylor, Vice President of Seneca Lake Guardian, released the following statement in response to yesterday evening’s Seneca Falls Town Board vote, awarding the Seneca Meadows Landfill a local permit to operate, being deemed invalid:

“Yesterday (Tuesday) evening’s vote by the Seneca Falls Town Board to approve the Host Community Agreement and Local Permit disregarded both public opinion and the health of the Finger Lakes region.

Now that we know the votes to approve the agreement and permit have been invalidated after a basic procedural oversight, the Board needs to take accountability.

If the Board can’t pass a motion correctly – a core governmental operation – how are we to have confidence in their ability to oversee complex landfill operations or invest the host agreement proceeds into a reserve for the inevitable cleanup that will be required?

With the next Town Board meeting scheduled for April 1, the Board has the opportunity to rectify their mistake: they still have the chance to listen to their constituents, sick from the odors and pollutants emanating from the landfill, and reject the permit and agreement outright.

There is still time to make this right. The people of Seneca Falls do not want this landfill. It is time for our elected leaders to do the right thing and represent the needs and wants of the overwhelming majority.”
